Production Diary: Week 1

Week 1:
  • At the very beginning, we looked at various music videos and discussed the sort of things to look out for when analysing music videos which would help later on in the year when we had to analyse music videos of our own genre however, it also gave us an idea what to possibly put in our music videos and inspired some ideas that we may possibly be using for our final piece. We also looked at what music meant to us and how that has changed. We looked at music in our childhood, early teens and the present day, by looking at this it was quite a fun task to look back on my music taste over the years but it also meant that I saw how music has also changed and developed over time.
  • Following this we looked at the history of music and the most influential music videos at that current period, we looked at the 60’s to the present day. My group and I looked at the 80s, where we found music videos from artists like Cameo, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Run DMC, Bon Jovi and Police which were the ones we decided upon in the end.  We all took one of the music videos and found out some information about them for example the directors and co-directors which meant we were able to have more of an insight into music videos and the whole process. After looking at everyone’s eras, it meant we were able to see a variety of the most influential music videos and which era they belonged to therefore, showing the change in music also.
  • We then started our preliminary task; we had to re-create the music video for Britney Spears – Hit Me Baby. The first thing we done was watch the music video and split the group up and give them 10 seconds to look at the different shots in this 10 seconds. I was given the first 10 seconds of the music video where it mostly just shows Britney in a classroom looking bored and watching the time so, I took it shot by shot and wrote down how long the shot lasted, what happens to it, what type of shot etc. by doing this it meant that when filming we were able to re-create the shots easier as all of the information we needed was just on paper and we could cross them off once we had finished with them. It also allowed us to get more familiar with one area of the music video and when it came to filming we would have known more about this particular area and could help on the filming side therefore, everyone would have had a turn at filming. We faced many difficulties when filming as there were several absences meaning our main Britney’s wasn’t always there which meant some of the filming could not be done in lesson time. There was also some scenes where we needed extras which was difficult as we couldn’t use other members from our classroom as they were filming their own Britney video so instead, we found people in their frees from our year and used them which cause difficulties as it wasted valuable filming time. Although when coming to an end we also had to use members of our class to begin editing the video in order to meet the deadline, this meant we were missing even more members than before but we also has a turn editing and playing around with getting the timing to fit with our lip syncing therefore giving each member of the group some practise which would help as we created our own music videos.
